What Causes Gum Disease — and How to Spot It
Periodontal (gum) disease often begins with subtle symptoms, but if left untreated, it can lead to serious oral health problems. Early signs include red, swollen, or tender gums that may bleed during brushing or flossing. In more advanced stages, gum disease can cause persistent bad breath and even loosen teeth as the infection spreads.
The primary cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. When plaque and tartar are not removed through regular brushing and flossing, bacteria can build up along the gumline, leading to inflammation and infection. Even patients with good habits can develop gum disease if there are hard-to-reach areas in the mouth that harbor plaque.
Regular checkups catch problems early and prevent lasting damage.
